How many bosses have you had that you really admired and thought were doing a great job? Most people are slow to answer this and don’t have a long list.
Why the lack of good leaders?
58% of employees trust strangers more than their own boss.Harvard Business Review
Leadership is hard, dam hard. Add to this that we tend to hold others (and especially leaders) too impossibly high standards. Much of this is to do with the normal cognitive biases we hold*. Furthermore leaders are not often trained well, indeed many are not trained at all.
*you can learn all about cognitive biases on the program.
Leaders are often promoted due to their competence ‘on the tools’. Being a good lawyer, engineer, nurse or designer does not naturally lend itself to be a good leader.

Leadership can be learned
Sure there are more or less natural tendencies, but so there is with everything. Regardless of where you sit on the leadership journey, you can always get better.
One of the challenges of many traditional leadership programs is that they are often a day or two and back to business as usual. It is very difficult to create change in this way, even for the most motivated.
Rachel has helped me with Organisational development, Leadership training and development of company values. She is high energy, creative, trustworthy and can operate at all levels of the organisations. A great coach. She really makes a difference!Adrian Stockhill. Wellington Water
Dr Rachel’s Small Group Leadership Program
Leadership doesn’t improve without personal development and personal development doesn’t happen without making consistent changes. This program is designed specifically to enable real measurable change to occur.
The small group leadership program has four foundation modules delivered in short interactive workshops (2-3hrs) 4 to 6 weeks apart.
In between the modules ….
- Leaders are given challenges to complete e.g. giving and receiving feedback, exploring personal values, practicing stress management techniques.
- Peer coaching circle are held. During these sessions each leader brings a problem/challenge to the session. A facilitated series of round robin processes enables peers to coach each other though finding a way forward.
The four foundation modules are shown below. Please note these are usually customised to meet the needs and background of the leaders attending.
Groups are kept to no more than 10, as this is a peer learning process and needs to be small enough for everyone to get involved, share and learn together.
Rachel was an important contributor in the ongoing development of staff through her energy and passion to bring new ideas and concepts in corporate leadership and management. I would highly recommend Rachel to companies looking to lift their business performance through improvements in the capabilities of the leadership teams.Robin Baxter. BHP
Q. I notice the KAN PLAN is for women only, is this program for women only too?
In house programs are usually mixed groups, it is simply practical. I am focusing on women specifically in some programs as historically my leadership coaching has been male focused, because leadership still is. Hence it is important to me to always be working with more women now than in the past. However working with all genders together is also a great way to work to close some of the leadership gaps, which is the responsibility of us all.
Q. Do you do one-on-one work?
Sure do, check out more here or get in touch to chat.
[Rachels] insight into how personal values effect how staff react to change is extremely good. Rachel is very passionate about her work and the people she coaches, she is also very adaptable with her coaching style and very approachable person.Craig McInnes. Dimension Software
Q. How does a peer coaching circle work?
You’ll need to attend one to get the exact details (and the magic sauce recipe). At a high level, each leader brings a real life issue or concern they are grappling with to the session. During the coaching circle, I provide a structured yet flexible and supportive environment where each leader is supported by others to come up with a solution. They are awesome, especially as leaders get to practice their coaching skills too.
